Guitar Fundamentals:

Fingerpicking for All Levels

I have 7 quick questions for you:

  • Are you trying to figure out what to learn next on guitar?

  • Do you wish you had more cool, impressive-sounding songs to play when someone asks you to “play something!”?

  • Are you struggling with basics like switching chords and keeping a steady rhythm—but sick of the same old strumming patterns and exercises?

  • Are you filled with an eternal burning fire of rage?

  • Do you need help practicing more effectively and consistently to level up your playing?

  • Do you have a reasonable fear of heights?

  • Do you want to get better at fingerpicking?

Fingerpicking just sounds so complicated...

...and so fast! My fingers literally don't movie that fast, let alone have that sort of coordination...

But here’s the truth:
Fingerpicking isn’t a talent. It’s a skill—and a surprisingly learnable one.
And once it clicks, it doesn’t just change how you play…
It changes how your guitar sounds, how it feels, and how you connect with music.

I’d like to tell you a story about how a 6-note pattern changed my life.
(That sounds dramatic. But what can I say? I’m a dramatic person.)

After playing guitar for a few years, I sorta felt like I’d maxed out. I was good at strumming chords, knew some scales, and could sort of learn songs by ear.

I did not think I’d mastered the instrument—far from it—but I couldn’t tell you what was wrong. I just knew other people sounded better than I did.

I figured maybe I’d hit my limit.
It’s not like I planned on becoming a shredder or jazz virtuoso.
(That’s not true. I had sort of planned on both.)

Maybe my hands were the wrong shape.
Maybe my brain wasn’t quick enough.
Maybe I just didn’t have the grit to practice enough.

Oh well. It’s fine. I’ll just be a mediocre guitarist.

Then I got forced—literally against my will—to learn a traditional fingerpicking song for a gig. Normally I’d fake my way through, plucking strings haphazardly. But that wasn’t going to fly for this performance.

So once I realized the whole song was built on one short, repeating 6-note pattern, I figured I could master it pretty quickly.

I started practicing. I got the hang of it fast—but it exposed every weak spot in my playing:
Sloppy chords. Inconsistent rhythm. Buzzy notes.
So I kept playing it. (I had to - the gig!)

And my playing started to shift.

  • My rhythm tightened
  • My chords sounded cleaner
  • My fingers moved with more confidence and independence

I didn’t just get better at fingerpicking—I got better at everything.

It fixed problems I didn’t even know I had.
Most importantly, it gave me something new to practice.

That’s why I created this course: to walk you down the same path, step by step. So you can level-up your ability while learning my personal favorite style to play.

This is going to be great. I'm not even nervous. Let’s get started!

INTRODUCING

FINGERPICKING FOR ALL LEVELS

Why Learn Fingerpicking?

  1. Tightens your rhythm
Fingerpicking trains your hands and brain to lock into steady rhythm — one of the most important skills for any musician.

  2. Improves your tone
When you pluck strings one by one, you hear everything. It forces you to clean up your chord switches, melodies, hammer-ons, pull-offs… every note matters.

  3. Boosts your dexterity and coordination
Fingerpicking sharpens your control, speed, and accuracy — your fingers get faster, more coordinated, and way better at doing exactly what you tell them to (finally).

  4. Sharpens your ear
Fingerpicking naturally helps you hear basslines, melodies, and harmonies more clearly, which boosts your musical recognition and memory.

  5. Teaches theory (without feeling like homework)
You’ll start recognizing chord tones, shapes, and patterns just through playing (with little-to-no "studying").

  6. Expands your style
Fingerpicking opens the door to new genres like folk, bossa nova, blues, classical, and more — it’s a great way to explore unfamiliar sounds and techniques.

  7. It’s just… fun
Satisfying, fun to show-off with, really pretty, and maybe the most engaging way to play guitar.

    1.

This course is designed to unlock all these benefits for you, with easy, step-by-step lessons and plenty of practice support

Playing guitar is fun, and so can you!

I am aware that the previous sentence doesn't make sense. I did it on purpose to be funny and to make it clear that I'm a dork just in case you didn't figure that out already.
